1. The ask: tell ops the moment a pet tag order is paid Our company sells pet tags (QR tags that clip onto a pet's collar) through a Flutter mobile app. The operations team wanted to know the moment a tag order was paid, instead of checking an
A dog trots up to its bowl, takes a few bites, looks around and goes back for more. To the dog, it's just lunch. To us, it's a handful of new files. Our smart bowl, EverBowl, has two cameras, a thermal camera, a microphone and a
A bowl that never stops talking Every EverBowl in a customer's kitchen is a small sensor station: a load cell weighing food and water, a temperature probe, a microphone and a camera, all reporting to the cloud around the clock. That stream lands in two tables in Amazon
A Simple Request: Stop Copying Offline Logic My task looked small: when there's no internet, show a friendly "No internet connection" screen on two surfaces of our Flutter app, the Journal and the Saved posts screen. My first version worked, but it worked the hard way.
The Tap That Went Nowhere The button worked. The SDK log said the event was queued, then flushed. The server came back with {"status":"Ok"}. The dashboard was empty. I was adding analytics to a journal screen in a Flutter app - nothing exotic, just a
The Hidden Cost of Peak Search Performance Hierarchical Navigable Small World (HNSW) graphs have rightfully earned their reputation as the speed demons of vector search, delivering sub-millisecond retrieval times across millions of embeddings. However, this lightning-fast performance comes with a steep trade-off: high RAM consumption. Because HNSW relies on keeping
The bottleneck of modern vector retrieval. When working with high-dimensional embedding space-whether serving semantic search, recommendation engines, or Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) pipelines - the fundamental challenge is nearest-neighbor search. Exact nearest-neighbor methods require calculating the vector distance (like Cosine or Euclidean) between a query vector and every single item in
The bottleneck in the handoff. For most of this project, converting a Figma screen into Flutter was the slowest, dumbest part of the job. The work wasn't hard, it was just relentlessly manual: open the design, click a frame, read the inspector, note that the gap is 12
The workload, before the database. Every smart bowl and collar in our fleet is a small, relentless firehose. A single device emits roughly twenty distinct event types: camera1 and camera2 frames, thermal and segmented images, audio clips, ocular temperature readings, plus a continuous drizzle of humidity, barometer, imu, proximity, weight,
We removed a cache last week to fix a stale-data bug, and the actual result was discovering that one of our endpoints had been taking two seconds for months. Nobody had filed a ticket about it. Nobody knew. The cache had been quietly absorbing it the entire time, and it
